WELCOME, SUSI 2009 PARTICIPANTS!On behalf of the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville, or UAH), the Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) wishes to welcome you to the United States! We are pleased to be part of the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) project and to work with the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and the Academy for Educational Development (AED) in providing you with an excellent opportunity to learn about American educational practices and culture. This is UAHuntsville's second year as a host university for SUSI; in 2008, UAHuntsville hosted a SUSI for Chinese student leaders.On this website, you will find tips to assist you in packing and planning for your trip, as well as information on what to expect from the program and from your stay in Huntsville. We also bring you greetings from our six SUSI Ambassadors, the corps of UAHuntsville students that will accompany you during your program, providing advice, cultural interpretation, and fun! The Ambassadors are all studying diverse topics, such as education, political science, and philosophy, and they will assist you in your study of the U.S. The Ambassadors are excited and curious to meet you! Before you arrive in the U.S., you will receive an email from UAHuntsville inviting you to join the ANGEL discussion forum online; there, you can ask the Ambassadors and the UAHuntsville SUSI staff any questions you may have. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Madison County (population ~387,000), Huntsville is a medium-sized city (population ~170,000) that affords the advantages of big city-living without many of its attendant problems. About 100 miles to the north is the Country Music Capital, Nashville, and about equal distance to the south is the international city of Birmingham. Atlanta, the site of the 1996 Olympic Games, is approximately 200 miles to the east. Part of the “New South,” Huntsville boasts the highest per capita rate of Ph.D.s in the United States. As a result of the presence of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the well-educated citizenry from diverse parts of the United States and residents from a wide variety of foreign lands have brought a cosmopolitan air to Huntsville. From the arts to the sciences, the community offers a wide variety of educational, entertainment, and other world-class events, such as the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, the Huntsville Opera Theatre, the Huntsville Ballet Company, the Twickenham Repertory Company, the Broadway Theatre League, and the Huntsville Feminist Choir. Several museums and historic sites can be found in Huntsville, including the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Burritt Museum and Park, the EarlyWorks Children’s Museum, the Alabama Constitution Village, the Huntsville Depot Museum, the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, Monte Sano State Park, the Von Braun Astronomical Society Observatory and Planetarium, and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. We know that we will all find this summer's Study of the U.S. Institute to be an amazing experience. We are excited about meeting you upon your arrival at the Huntsville International Airport and look forward to learning more about you and your culture.
