Sponsored International Students
The OIPS serves as the contact point for students participating in the Freedom Support Act (FSA, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State). Under this program, students from former republics of the Soviet Union are selected under a highly-competitive process and placed in American universities for one year of study. Conducting this program on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, the American Councils for International Education (ACIE) has placed thousands of students at universities throughout the U.S. From 1997 through 2002, the OIPS coordinated with ACIE in the placement of dozens of FSA students at UAH. Beginning in 2002, the OIPS is coordinating with the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) in the placement of Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program, UGRAD (formerly FSA) students at UAH. In 2004, UAH was selected to host Russian Young Leadership Fellows for Public Service Program (YLF) and Bosnia-Herzogovina Undergraduate Program (BUDP) students, managed by ACIE and IREX, respectively.
From 1997 through 2001, the OIPS also worked with ACIE in the placement at UAH of Uzbek students as Umid Presidential Scholars (a program sponsored by the government of Uzbekistan). Under this program, students study at select universities for three-to-five years to complete their degree program. The Umid program provided opportunities for students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
In 2004, UAH was selected to be one of five campuses to host the new Partnerships for Learning Undergraduate Study (PLUS) for students from the Middle East and North Africa. Under this program, students study at select universities for two years to complete their degree program. The undergraduate portion of the program is managed by the Acadmey for Educational Development (AED).
Under the UGRAD, PLUS, BUDP, YLF, P4L and Umid programs, to date more than 60 students have been or are now attending UAH from the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Krygyzstan, Morroco, Palestine, Russia, Saudia Arabia, Serbia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Yemen.
