Fellow Bios

From September 25 – November 6, 2008, UAHuntsville hosted its third session of the TEA program for 20 teachers from Bangladesh, India, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Bangladesh

Shamsun Naher, English Teacher
Adarsha Girls’ High School
North Dania, Dhaka, Bangladesh (Population 40,592,431)
U.S. Host University: University of Alabama, Huntsville

Shamsun Naher has been teaching as an Assistant English Teacher at the secondary level in a Bengali Medium School for the past five years.  The age of her students ranges from 14-16 years old and on average there are 100 students in her class.  She is an active member of her school’s English Language club.  She also provides trainings for her peers in teaching methodology.  She received a Master’s degree in English from National University in 2005.  She is married with two young daughters and her hobbies include reading books and traveling.  Her goal for participating in TEA is to explore new methodologies to engage students in a more participatory and active classroom setting. 

 

Md. Mizanur Rahman Sheik, Assistant Headmaster

Md. Mizanur Rahman Sheik has been teaching English since 1994 at the secondary level.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in English from Dhaka University in 1992 and an M.A. in English, a B.Ed. and an M.Ed from Darul Ihsan University.  As the Assistant Headmaster, he supervises the academic side of the school and assists the Headmaster in administrative activities.  Md. Mizanur is married with a daughter.  His hobbies are reading, traveling, and watching TV.  By taking part in the TEA program, he looks forward to the opportunity to explore new methodologies and techniques for engaging students in a more participatory and active classroom environment.

 

India

Saibal Basu, English Teacher
Arabinda Madhyamik Bidyalaya High School
Jalpaiguri, India (Population 1,727,200)
U.S. Host University: University of Alabama, Huntsville

Saibul Basu has been teaching English language and literature in a government sponsored co-education Higher Secondary School for the last 13 years.  The age of his students ranges from 10-20 years old and his classes have an average of 55 students.  Saibul is an active participant in the academic activities and curriculum-research work of the school and he is currently the Cultural Secretary of the institution.  The difficulties some students have trying to acquire English language skills have always been a concern for Saibal as a teacher.  He has a post-graduate degree in English Literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and holds a Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Bengal.  Saibul is married with a daughter and his hobbies include music, dance, and theater.  His main aim for taking part in the TEA program is to explore new modes of teaching English as a second language to students who are socially marginalized and economically challenged. 

 

Sandhya Jena, Geography Teacher

Bubaneswar, Orissa, India (Population: 800,000)
U.S. Host University: University of Alabama, Huntsville

Sandhya Jena has been teaching geography to grades 8-10 in this school for the last 16 years.  Each classroom consists of an average of 40 students between the ages of 13-15 years old.  She has participated in seminars/workshops on disaster management and adolescent education and she guides students for scholarship examinations/competitions.  Sandhya received her Master of Philosophy degree from Utkal University in 1992, Master of Arts degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1991 and Bachelor of Education degree from Calcutta University in 1989.  She is unmarried and lives with her father, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew.  Her hobbies include reading, listening to music, and watching television.  Her main goal for the TEA program is to get a better understanding of the American education system and American culture and to see how it can be incorporated in Indian schools to provide a wholesome learning environment for children. 

 

Arundhati Ray, Economics Teacher/Coordinator Senior Section
Birla High School (Girls’ Section)
Kolkata, India (Population: 13,216,546)

Arundhati Ray has been teaching economics at a private school for the past 17 years.  Her students range from 14-18 years old and on average there are 30 students in her class.  As a coordinator, she has played an active role in supervising all the curricular and co-curricular activities of students in grades 9-12.  She has organized subject workshops for teachers and met parents to discuss different issues related to their children.  Arundhati received her Master of Philosophy degree in Economics from the University of Calcutta and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the same university.  She is married with a son and a daughter and her hobbies include listening to Indian music and reading.  Her main purpose for participating in TEA is to emerge as a role model for her students so that they too may believe in opening themselves to new experiences and gaining new ideas. 

 

Kazakhstan

Alfiya Gazina, English Teacher

Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan (Population 350,000)

Alfiya Gazina has been teaching English at Secondary School # 27 for 28 years. The age of her students ranges from 10-18 years old.  Working part time as vice principal she is responsible for scientific work, holding methodology seminars, workshops, and trainings for teachers. She graduated from Ust-Kamenogorsk Pedagogical Institute in 1979 and received a diploma in teaching English. She is not married, but she is raising her nephew. Her hobbies are using the computer and watching tennis. Her primary objective for participating in TEA is to exchange opinions with her colleagues on school problems, for example how to motivate students with low levels of proficiency.

 

Gulnar Issabekova, English Teacher

Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan (Population 270,000)

Gulnar Issabekova has been teaching English at a secondary school for the past 27 years. Her students are between 10-18 years old, and on average her classes have 20 students. Gulnar is a member of TEK (Teachers Association), a lecturer at the Re-Training Institute, and provides trainings for beginning teachers in teaching methodology.  She was accepted to participate in the International Teachers Program in Houston, Texas and has attended other local and international conferences and received certificates. Gulnar is married with two sons. She likes music and poetry and tries her hand at the translation of poems from Kazakh into Russian and English. She hopes, through her participation in TEA, to increase her knowledge in English, methodology and teaching students with new educational technologies.

 

Zulfiya Smanova, English Teacher

U.S. Host University: University of Alabama, Huntsville

Zulfiya Smanova has been teaching English literature and language at a public secondary school for the past 17 years. Her classes have an average of 12 students between the ages of 13-17 years old.  Zulfiya heads the English Teachers’ Unit of the region and created a School for English Teachers as a teacher-trainer program with the aim of promoting village teachers’ language and methodological proficiency. She is a member of the National Association of English Teachers of Kazakhstan and takes part in its conferences. Zulfiya is married and has a daughter and two sons. Her hobbies are reading and theatre. Her objective for participating in TEA is to learn more English teaching methodology and to share the experience with her colleagues to promote their efficiency.

 

Kyrgyzstan

Nazgul Kabylbaeva, English Teacher

Nazgul Kabylbaeva has been teaching English literature and language at a public secondary school for the past 12 years. The age of her students ranges from 9-16 years old, and on average there are 20 students in her class. Her goal is to promote effective parental involvement in student education. She also provides trainings for her peers in teaching methodology. In 1995 she received a Bachelor’s degree in marketing from Karakol Management Institute. She is married with two young sons and her hobbies include reading and listening to music. By participating in TEA, she looks forward to exploring new methodologies for creating a participatory classroom environment in which to engage students.

 

Astra Shekenbaeva, English Teacher

Naryn, Kyrgyzstan (Population 42,000)

Astra Shekenbaeva has been teaching English at a public secondary school for the last 5 years. Her students range from 11-18 years old, with an average of 20 students in each of her classes. She is an active member of FORUM, the Naryn English Teachers’ Association, where she conducts trainings with other English teachers in Naryn. In 2002, Astra received her diploma in Teaching English and Literature. She has many certificates of completion from various teacher trainings. Astra is unmarried and she likes watching movies and enjoys creative arts. Her primary objective for participating in TEA is to expand her knowledge in writing syllabi and textbooks according to the regional and school needs. 

 

Svetlana Tulapina, English Teacher

Kant, Kyrgyzstan
U.S. Host University: University of Alabama, Huntsville

Svetlana Tulapina has been teaching English at a public secondary school for the past 7 years.  Her classes have an average of 25-30 students that range between 11-17 years old. Svetlana is a leader of the English teachers’ committee at her school and a leader of a students’ English club. She is an active member of the English Teachers’ Association, FORUM, where she provides trainings for her peers in teaching methodology. Svetlana received a diploma after graduation from Bishkek Medical Institute, four certificates in teaching methods from Bishkek Pedagogical Institute, and also a diploma from the Centre of English Language. She was a participant of CATEC in both Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Svetlana is married; she has a son and a daughter. Her hobbies include playing the piano and the guitar, singing songs, dancing, playing volleyball and English. Her objectives for taking part in TEA are to find out new methods of teaching, new ways of conducting trainings for teachers, and ideas about out-of-class work for students.

 

Turkmenistan

Jahan Agajanova, English Teacher

Jahan Agajanova has been teaching English at Secondary School # 2 for the past five years.  The age of her students ranges from 7-16 years old.  There is an average of 30 students in her class.  Jahan is an active member of an English seminar that is held in her home city where she tries to find new, more effective ways of teaching foreign language.  She is not married and her favorite hobby is music.  Jahan’s primary objective for participating in the TEA program is to find and explore new methodologies for teaching foreign language. 

 

Solmaz Permanova, English Teacher

Solmaz Permanova has been teaching English at Secondary School #2 for the past five and a half years.  The age of her students ranges from 11-16 years old and, on average, there are 18-20 students in her class.  Solmaz is a supervisor of 7th grade ‘E’.  She also provides training to teachers of the 4-6th grades.  Solmaz has led computer classes for teachers at her school and she has published school newspapers with news and facts about life at her school.  Solmaz is married with a young daughter.  She loves music, and enjoys watching TV news and theater.  Her purpose for participating in the TEA program is to exchange her experience with other teachers to further develop her skills in teaching both English and American studies. 

 

Jemal Saypullayeva, English Teacher

Jemal Saypullayeva has taught English at a secondary school since 2001.  She teaches in the afternoons 24 hours per week and, in the mornings, she is involved in organizing English summer camps for children and teachers.  She is an educator and her primary goal is to learn about education, classroom methodology, and curriculum development.  Her long term goal is to assist teachers in teaching.  Jemal spends her free time with children playing fun games.  She is not married and graduated from the Teacher Training Institute in Turkmenabat. 

 

Ukraine

Nina Krasylova, English Teacher

Nina Krasylova teaches English as a public secondary school.  She has been teaching for more than 13 years and works with students age 8-16.  Her class average is about 25 students and she uses both Russian and Ukrainian languages in the classroom.  Nina is actively involved in community outreach to families to bring more at-risk children into the school system and is an organizer in the Professional Unit, a program dedicated to assisting teachers in need.  Nina received her diploma in English and Ukrainian language and literature from Sumy Pedagogical Institute in 1995.  Nina shares a home with her mother.  Her hobbies include knitting, reading, jogging, and more recently she has discovered computers and the Internet.  Nina’s objectives for participating in TEA are to learn newer and more effective teaching methodologies and ways to incorporate computers and technology in the classroom. 

 

Tetyana Pavlenko, English Teacher

Tetyana Pavlenko has been teaching English language at a comprehensive secondary school for the past 19 years.  The age of her students ranges from 7-17 years old and there are 14-19 students in her classes.  Tetyana received a Master’s degree in English from Kiev Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.  She is married with two children.  Her main objectives for taking part in the TEA program are to gain new interactive methods of teaching English, implementing computer techniques, and cultivating social skills. 

 

Ruslana Shamans’ka, English Teacher

U.S. Host University: University of Alabama in Huntsville

Ruslana Shamans’ka has been an English teacher for the last seven years.  The age of her students ranges from 7-17 years old.  She is extremely active in her school life and the life of her city.  Ruslana is the head of the district Junior Science Academy, the coordinator of the school’s European club, twice took part in the Polish-Ukrainian exchange program, is the trainer-consultant in the Internet Center, the advisor to the head of the district state administration, the president of the school intellectual club, and has participated in different seminars and trainings.  Ruslana is married and her hobbies include traveling and photography.  She seeks to enrich her teaching experience, as well as find new friends and new international relations for her school and city. 

 

Uzbekistan

Guzal Halmatova, English Teacher

Guzal Halmatova has been teaching English at a public secondary school for the past 4 years. Her students range from 12-16 years old, and on average there are 15 students in her class. Guzal has been working as leader of the English Corner in her school. She uses different games and communicative approaches to help her students become interested in English. She also serves as volunteer leader of the city’s British Council supported English Readers’ Club. Guzal received a Bachelor’s degree in English from Andijan State Pedagogical Institute of Languages. She is not married and lives with her parents. Her hobbies include reading books and swimming. The main purpose of her participation in TEA is to explore new methodologies for establishing a center where any teacher can benefit from advisors.

 

Lyudmila Kamalova, English Teacher

Lyudmila Kamalova has been teaching English for the past 26 years. Her classes have an average of 15 students between the ages of 7-18 years old.  Kamalova is a member of TEA and takes part in annual conferences, CATECs, and seminars. She also provides trainings for English teachers from the Tashkent and Jizzak regions. Kamalova received a Bachelor’s degree in English from Kokand State Pedagogical Institute in 1973 and certificates in teaching methods from the British Council and other organizations. Kamalova has a son and a brother. Her main purpose for taking part in TEA is to explore new methodologies that create an active and participatory environment for students.

 

Feruza Madaliyeva, English Teacher

Rishtan, Ferghana Province, Uzbekistan (Population: 22,580)
U.S. Host University: University of Alabama in Huntsville

Feruza Madaliyeva has been teaching the English language at a public secondary school for the past 5 years. The age of her students ranges from 13 to 15 years old, and on average there are 28 students in her class. She is an active leader of Youth English Club and Village Water Committee where she plays a facilitating role in promoting healthy behavior habits among school children. Feruza also provides trainings for teachers, parents, and children on interactive methods of teaching. She received a Bachelor’s degree in English from Ferghana State University in 2002. She is married with one daughter and her hobbies are swimming, reading books, and working on the computer. Her main objective for participating in TEA is to gain firsthand knowledge and understanding of teachers’ experiences, student learning, and classroom interaction in public schools in the U.S.  She also wants to discuss her impressions and questions and get a multidimensional perspective on concrete issues, make important contacts, and build new friendships and partnership projects with U.S. schools. Feruza would like to learn more about new and innovative approaches and share her own experience with others through the TEA program.
