Health

If necessary, you should bring enough of your prescription medicines to last the duration of the Institute. If you rely on glasses or contacts, it's a good idea to bring an extra pair. Make sure that you take these important supplies on your carry-on baggage. (Do not put them in your checked baggage, in case it gets lost.)

In the U.S., patients are expected to pay for medical treatment they receive, and the costs can become quite high. For this reason, health insurance can be bought to cover the risks of high medical bills. All students will be enrolled in the United States Department of State Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE) Health Benefit Plan, administered by Seven Corners. You will be given insurance cards. If you need to see a doctor, please contact the OIPS staff and notify us as soon as possible so we can help you get to a doctor that will accept your insurance.

The ASPE insurance is designed to cover health problems that develop while you are in the U.S. during the program (such as accidents, appendicitis, etc.). Please note that the insurance does NOT cover;
  • treatment for pre-existing conditions (such as pregnancy, diabetes, or migraine headaches that you had before you came), unless they develop into an emergency during the program,
  • routine visits to a physician (such as a physical), or
  • injuries incurred from reckless behavior (such as rock climbing).
  • visits to the dentist
Participants have the option of purchasing additional health insurance or extending their insurance when they arrive. If you already have your own health insurance and it includes coverage in the U.S., you should bring evidence of your health insurance with you.
