Weather and Clothing
The 2008 Study of the U.S. Institute at UAH will take place in the summer, which is typically hot and humid like the rest of the American South. On average, July is the hottest month, with average temperatures ranging from a low of about 70°F to highs of above 90°F (or from around 20°C to above 30°C).
In the heat, it is important to protect yourself from the strong sun. If you are going to be outside, bring a hat with a brim to shield your face and neck, and use sun-screen. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated. You might also want to bring a bathing suit to swim in our indoor Olympic-size pool at the UAH Fitness Center.
You can also expect to see some rain, so make sure you bring a rainjacket or umbrella, or buy one when you get here. You can check the weather forecasts at some of the linked sites below.
All buildings on campus have air conditioning, as do most buildings in the community. However, some people find that the air conditioning makes them feel too cold, so we recommend that you bring a long-sleeved shirt or light sweater or cardigan with you to class.
Typical dress style is casual clothing, like jeans, tennis shoes, sandals. However, you should bring one nice outfit (shirt and tie, dress, etc...) to wear at important meetings or gatherings.
Packing Notes:
-Bed linens (including sheets, blankets, pillows, and towels) will be provided for you by UAH. We will also provide an iron, if needed. You should bring anything else that you need, such as a razor and hair dryer. We do have some hair dryers and alarm clocks that you may use. All appliances must be alternating current, 60 cycles, 110 volts in order to work in the U.S. If not, you should bring an adapter.
-If necessary, you should bring enough of your prescription medicines to last the duration of the Institute. If you rely on glasses or contacts, it's a good idea to bring an extra pair. Make sure that you travel with these important supplies on your carry-on baggage. (Do not put them in your checked baggage, in case it gets lost.)
